The TestDaF
The examination for German as a foreign language- TestDaF – is an international language examination for those who already have a good knowledge in the German language and want to verify this.
Foreign study applicants have to prove that they have aquired sufficient language knowledge (according to the Academic Framework Law or the Academic Laws in the Federal States). This verification can be rendered by the TestDaF.
The "TestDaF" - exam can only be taken at licensed examination centres - such as the Eduard-von-Hallberger-Institute in Freudenstadt.
Content of the TestDaF
The "TestDaF"- exam consists of four parts:
Reading Comprehension
(3 reading texts with 30 tasks altogether; 60 minutes)
Listening Comprehension
(3 listening texts with 26 tasks altogether; 40 minutes)
Written Expression
( 1 writing task; 60 minutes)
Oral Expression
(7 tasks for speaking; 35 minutes)
TestDaF Levels
There are four TestDaF exam levels according to CEF (CEF = Common European Framework):
TDN5 (corresponds to a middle to upper C1-level)
TDN4 (corresponds to an upper B2 to middle C1-level)
TDN3 (corresponds to a lower to middle B2-level)
under TDN3 (corresponds to under B2-level, also A1 to B1)
In order to enter a college or an university in Germany applicants are required to have reached at least TDN4 level in all four skill areas. For some colleges (e.g. music colleges) a lower level than TDN4 is sufficient.
Examination Fee and Registration
The Examination Fee for the TestDaF exam is 175,00 € and is payable at the time of registration.
