The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The education of European languages was divided by the European Comission into six skill levels from A1 (low language skills) to C2 (very good language skills, almost comparable to native speakers):

A1 to C1


A1

Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases as well as phrases used for satisfying basic and concrete needs. Can introduce him / herself and others and ask questions about personal details- such as name, address, friends, things they own, etc. - and can provide answers to questions about these topics. Can interact in a simple way if the interlocutor talks slowly, clearly and is ready to help.

A2

Can understand particular sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (eg. personal information, shopping, work, proximity). Can communicate in simple and routine situations in which simple and direct exchange of information on familiar topics and activities is needed. Can describe in simple terms, places, things, his / her own education and his / her environment.

B1

Can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can express him / herself in a simple but coherent way on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and provide a short statement or an explenation for plans and opinions.

B2

Can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics and can also understand discussions in their field of specialization. Can interact with fluency and spontaneity which makes an usual conversation with a native speaker possible without strains for either speaker. Can express him / herself clearly and detailed on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

C1

Can understand a broad range of demanding, longer texts and recognize implicit meaning. Can express him / herself quite fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social and professional purposes or in education and own studies. Can comment clearly and well-structured on complex subjects, describe something detailed or give account and connect his / her statements contentswise and linguistically.

C2

Can easilyunderstand almost everything he / she reads or hears. Can describe issues and arguments from different spoken and written sources and summerize in a coherent presentation. Can express him / herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating also in more complex situations shades of meaning.

The Eduard-von-Hallberger-Institute (EHI) offers German intensive courses at all levels from A1 to C1 with 28 lessons per week.
